FEATURE

For Thomas Thomas, it was the most prestigious commission of his career and not for him to question the morals of the client. His role was merely to survey Connemara and report whether or not the famine survivors could be cleared off the land, allowing the English investment company to open up the vast Irish estate for tourism. What he found difficult to understand was why he immediately felt an affinity with such an alien place. He was also not prepared for the redoubtable Patsy Martin, the last surviving member of the family that had ruled the area for generations. Patsy’s not the only person trying to stop him doing his job. The shady Liam Daly is determined that Thomas will not get to survey the remote Barnanorann Mountain. When Thomas exposes that the resident managing agent has been fleecing local tenants, Patsy’s mind games have to be rethought. The locals are warming to the peculiar Welshman but Patsy keeps laying on the guilt. Neither of them wants to admit it but their relationship is changing. It takes Thomas to visit the brink of death, and Patsy to nurse him back, for them both to realise why the hidden ties are there. But are they strong enough for Thomas to put his professionalism, and upbringing, to one side and keep the estate for its people?
