Ben has Asperger’s Syndrome but nobody knows it. His Mother, Sue, just thinks he’s odd. Why would an eleven year-old want to watch old movies all the time? David, his father, blames all the problems Ben is having at school on the fact, that being a naval officer, he’s never been around enough for him. Then Ben finds Lucy. She understands him. Lucy has escaped from a bad marriage and found a new passion in opening a shop selling classic movies. How was Ben to know that Lucy was his Father’s lost love? And she discovers the problem with Ben.
Sue’s reaction to the weird woman in the video shop telling her that Ben has some sort of syndrome is not good. Ben’s grounded from seeing her. When David drops the bombshell that he is leaving the Navy, and the crazy woman is his ex-girlfriend, it’s all too much for Sue. She comes clean about the affair she’s been having and throws David out for good measure. Now Ben can’t see Lucy or his Dad.
With the bullying getting worse at school Ben decides to take control. After all, kids with Asperger’s are supposed to be brighter than adults and why can’t he write his own third act and ending?
